Pioneers of Change, supported by DutchDFA, showcases fashion, design and architecture in and around eleven Officer’s houses at Nolan Park on Governors Island in New York. Pioneers of Change encourages a more responsible and sustainable approach to the way we live. The event that is held between 11 and 20 September, focuses on qualities that are hard to come by nowadays, such as space, fresh air, respect, care, silence, slowness and time.
Participants include leading designers from fashion, design and architecture, such as: 2012 Architecten, Atelier NL, Maarten Baas, Franck Bragigand, Droog with Marije Vogelzang, Herman Verkerk, Rianne Makkink and Hansje van Halem, Experimental Jetset, Pascale Gatzen, Christien Meindertsma, MVRDV and The Why Factory with Work Architecture Company, Painted, Parsons The New School for Design, Platform 21, Marcel Schmalgemeijer, NL Architects and Michael Schoner, Richard Hutten, Atelier van Lieschout and Chris Kabel.
From each disciplin we here highlight one contribution. Maarten Baas shows his Milan hit Grandfather’s Clock. It seems as if a human hand moves the dials, minute after minute. The Boombench by NL Architects allows visitors to listen to their own music via Bluetooth, with the bench functioning as a ghettoblaster. The fashion collective Painted combines Dutch lace making with American Indian beadwork. Through a collaboration with the Parsons New School of Design, they literally rekindle old connections.
Open Talks is organised in collaboration with the Cooper Hewitt Museum on September 10. The discussion on what notions of luxury fit the economic downfall receives input by Marije Vogelzang, Maarten Baas and 2012 Architects. The second talk is questioning the difference between the ‘design world’ and the ‘normal world’ with non-professionals and Saskia van Drimmelen, Jurgen Bey, Joanna van der Zanden.
The Netherlands will present New York with the New Amsterdam Pavilion by Ben van Berkel of UN Studio.
