Sleep in a cube
Press Release:

On 15 June 2009, Stayokay opened the doors of a new, trendy city hostel in the striking Cube Houses in Rotterdam by architect Piet Blom. The unique architecture has been an attraction for tourists from the Netherlands and abroad for 25 years now. The expressive and colorful cube-shaped houses on concrete pillars are located right in the heart of the city, near the ‘Old Harbour’. Spending the night in a tilted cube is quite a unique experience. In addition to the 49 spacious rooms, Stayokay Rotterdam also has a restaurant, bar and two rooms for meetings and workshops. The interior concept of designer Edward van Vliet (SEVV) was used as a starting point.

49 rooms offering a total of 245 beds
The Stayokay hostel has been built in part of the famous Cube Houses complex in Rotterdam. The houses were designed by the Dutch architect Piet Blom and were built between 1982 and 1984. All 49 rooms, with a total of 245 beds, are equipped with their own shower and toilet. No two rooms are alike. The light is different practically everywhere, as are the dimensions and the view from this architectural symbol of Rotterdam. In some rooms the walls slope towards you, whereas in others, they slope away from you. In order to accentuate the cube effect, an extra cube hangs in the platform of the main building, its tip pointing downward. Four catwalks and a lift bisect this cube and connect the floors.

Dynamic, hospitable interior

Stayokay Rotterdam has a sleek, modern interior with a fresh, welcoming feel. An interior that has been created with guests’ need for privacy and a certain degree of luxury in mind. The city hostel is brimming with energy thanks to the dynamic red and orange colour accents. Warm, natural hues and unusual materials have been used in the stylish and comfortable bedrooms. Several rooms even have flexible bunk beds, allowing the beds to be easily rebuilt into single or double beds. The hostel has rooms to accommodate from 2 to 8 guests, which are suitable for individual guests as well as families and groups. One night’s accommodation including breakfast starts at just € 23,50 per person.

Unique location in metropolis

Rotterdam is known throughout the world for its large, modern port. The multi-faceted city is rich in  modern architecture, museums, restaurants, shops and the major events it hosts. Rotterdam also has a fantastic skyline. Almost everything visitors might want to see in the port city is at walking distance from the hostel. Rotterdam is also easy to discover by bicycle or public transport. The Cube Houses are located above the Blaak, with a partial view overlooking the ‘Old Harbour’, a historic area of the city where one can often see unusual ships mooring. The restaurants and pavement cafés in this area known for its lively nightlife attract students, locals and tourists in particular.

Stayokay turns 80

With the opening of the new hostel in Rotterdam, Stayokay celebrates its 80th anniversary. The hostel is the latest addition to an impressive list of (new) construction projects in Amsterdam and Maastricht. Stayokay is a chain consisting of 30 hostels located at various surprisingly beautiful sites throughout the Netherlands: in city centres, in the countryside, on the coast or next to water. The hostels are located in castles, contemporary modern architectural buildings or stately homes. For 80 years, Stayokay has been the largest provider of group and budget accommodation in the Netherlands. In 2008, Stayokay was the first hospitality chain in Europe to receive the European Eco-label.
