Art Land Flevoland
Art Land Flevoland
Press release:

Starting on May 9th from 5 p.m. to 6 pm., you can watch the Dutch TV programme KunstUur (ArtHour) every Saturday in May to discover land art in Flevoland! This portrait of the province of Flevoland is aired by broadcaster Avro on the occasion of the realization of the sixth land art project in the Flevo Polder: Exposure (2010) by the British artist Antony Gormley. With this monumental artwork, Flevoland takes another step in this province’s impressive tradition of land art.

The four-part series Kunstland (Art land) by director Michael Krass focuses on land art as a central element within the development of Flevoland. The series features beautiful imagery and shows several people talking about the origins of the polder and land art, including Harry Dijksma, deputy for the Province of Flevoland, Macha Roesink, director of Museum De Paviljoens, and artist Marinus Boezem, creator of De Groene Kathedraal (The Green Cathedral, 1978-1996). In addition, ample attention is paid to the development of the Northeast Polder. The documentary is an initiative of the Municipality of Lelystad, the Province of Flevoland and Museum De Paviljoens in Almere and is a co-production of Avro and Idtv.

Exposure (2010)
Early 2010, Flevoland’s newest land art project will be revealed on the longitudinal dike near Lelystad: Exposure by the internationally renowned artist Antony Gormley. This monumental artwork consists of a steel construction featuring 1782 steel nodes and represents a squatting human figure of over 25 metres high that looks out over the IJsselmeer (Lake IJssel). The five current land art projects within the Province of Flevoland are trend-setting and have received international recognition. There’s no other place in the world where the density of land art is as high as in this province; it’s a unique situation. Beginning in 1977, international artists have been invited to realize land art projects within Flevoland’s new polder landscape. With his new artwork, Gormley gives new meaning to the term land art. It’s a new step for a province with an impressive tradition in land art.
