What are the core principles behind the DutchDFA programme? The DutchDFA programme will be driven by collaboration: between and with Dutch ministries, between and with Dutch professional organisations in the three design sectors, between and with individual designers and with a multitude of partners in focus countries and other countries where parallel programme activities will manifest themselves. In addition, a set of key characteristics will steer the development of the entire programme: activities will be matching, multi-disciplinary, long-term, enterprising, exploratory and distinguishing in nature. What is the DutchDFA programme’s approach? Starting point for the 2009 programme is a set of characteristic qualities, through which the Dutch design sector can distinguish itself in the three focus countries China, India and Germany. These qualities involve a combination of a conceptual approach with technical innovation.
A second starting point is sustainability, from an ecological, as well as a social and economic perspective. The third starting point is that of dialogue between design cultures, leading to the exchange of knowledge and the joint development of new knowledge. [See

What are the themes around which the DutchDFA programme will be developed? The subjects around which the DutchDFA programme will manifest itself, are brought together under four thematic headers: survival, renewal, identity and community. Issues that will determine our future have generated these themes, including: globalisation (urbanisation, migration, economic instability, shifting cultural identities), and the need for sustainable development in the light of climate change, environmental issues and energy shortages. All of which are issues that have global relevance and to which designers can and must contribute. [See
